Sports

Cheerleaders

It is a well-known fact that athletes play their best when they know someone wants them to win.
The cheerleaders directed the spectators in cheers of encouragement. At N. H. S., the girls, dressed in their blue pleated skirts and white sweaters, came to every game with the hope of raising enough spirit among the crowd to win the contest.
Sophomore girls practiced for two weeks under the supervision of the junior and senior cheerleaders. After this practice period, tryouts were held for the much-coveted position of Junior Varsity Cheerleader. Once this goal was reached, advancement to Varsity Cheerleader came easily.
Mr. Harper, the sponsor of this group, used his ingenuity along with that of the girls to write new cheers. Susan Conrad, the captain, and the girls always seemed full of pep and just raring in cheer.

Hockey

Racing down the field in pursuit of the rapidly disappearing little white ball, the members of the girls' hockey team possessed the spirit and the determination so necessary, so vital, in such a strenuous game. During the months of October and November, the energetic lassies practised faithfully each day. Under the expert coaching of Mrs. Jane Brederlow, the Varsity had a fairly successful season. Two wins, one tie and three losses were recorded. Each member was inspired by the ability and the spirit of the seniors and their co-captains, Jean Weidenmeyer and Barbara Latimer.

Cross Country

If an innocent spectator would have strolled through the park one day in October, he may have thought that some displaced Marathon runners were a few thousand years too late. After 'recovering from his amazement, he would realize that the royal colors of blue and white would have been a bit unusual for the ancient Greeks. But the bewildered visitor would soon discover that these (famous?) runners were members of the Norristown High School Cross Country Team.
Jay Smith and Clyde Price, co-captains, who had trained together throughout the summer, set examples for the rest of the team to follow.
The main qualifications for Cross Country were the desire and determination to succeed. Both are essential in the running of the courses which range from two to six miles. Endurance, which is vital in this sport, requiring great physical exertion, was built up by the faithful practice of each member.
Although hindered by injuries, the team had an average season. The coach, Mr. Wittmaier, was rightly proud of his team which performed so faithfully for N. H. S.

Girls Basketball

Highlighting the girls' sports scene at Eisenhower was the dynamic girls' basketball team, coached by Mrs. Jane Brederlow.
The girls spent many hours of faithful practice while learning the skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting. Proving that their many hours of hard work were not in vain, the Eaglettes scored a smashing victory over their neighboring rival, Upper Merion.
The enthusiasm and drive the girls exhibited in playing drew many spectators. Helping to spur the team onward were Joan Hay and Janice Boone. Louise Rose and Jean Wiedinmyer led the team in scoring, followed by their able captain, Ellen Quietmeyer.
The junior varsity team recorded four wins and four losses. Since this was such a good season, the next years' results were promising.

Soccer

Grantland Rice once wrote about sports:
Keep coming back for all they've got, and take it with a grin.
When disappointment trips you up or failure bark your shin;
Keep coming back - and if at last you lose the game of right
Let those who whipped you know at least they, too, have had a fight.

Mr. Rice probably meant all sports in general, but his statement describes Soccer very well. Though the boys receive many spills, they still jump up and continue to play harder than ever. Another thing the team takes with a grin is the bruising after school practices. This may not have seemed like fun but proves to be enjoyable and rewarding. Much of this reward goes to Mr. Lester Hoffmaster, who coached the varsity squad, and to the junior varsity coach, Mr. E. Ray Shank.

Wrestling

That tangle of arms and legs on the wrestling mat is not a mixed-up octopus, it's Elmer Romeis, acting captain of the Norristown High School wrestling team, struggling with a fellow-wrestler. Unlike the practiced matches seen on television, these boys are grunting and groaning for a purpose. This year's record shows that that purpose has been fulfilled under the coaching of Mr. Hess and Mr. Kent. The season consisted of eleven matches; five home and six away.
The weight classes range from 95 to 180 pounds and often a would-be wrestler cannot compete because he has exceeded his weight limit. This fact is only too well known to those boys who starved themselves in order to compete in a match.

Baseball

With the coming of spring comes baseball. The little kids start pestering
their worldly brothers to let them accompany them to the park, to the sandlot, to wherever there happens to be room enough to play 'ball'. The 'kids' grow up. They come to high school. They really begin to work at their game, but it's still fun. Last year, under the tutorship of Mr. Leon Martz and Mr. Eugene Kauler, the boys put in a rugged training period, then commenced to put their know-how into action. However, first they had to lose to Haverford before they were ready to tackle the rest. Tackle the team did. The flying Eagles came back with a no hit, no run game pitched by Frank Bishop. The birds had every team in the whole league sitting back licking their wounds and the great arm of Bishop kept on . . . .

Twelve games. Twelve wins. The Martzmen slammed Upper Darby 3-0, Chester 7-0, Abington 5-1, Lower Merion 9-5, Cheltenham 7-0, Plymouth-Whitemarsh 15-2 and on, and on, and on, finally being stopped by a satisfied Abington, who trounced them 2-7. But the Eagles were flying. They came right back, defeating Lower Merion 8-7, to win the Suburban One League Championship.
Cottman added the crowning touch and closed his career in baseball at N. H. S. by pitching a no hit, no run game against Cheltenham. The boys had a beautiful season. They had a satisfying season. They had a winning season. The 'kids' grew up.
